The wood surface is nothing special, just wood that is not unique in any way. That said, the piece is very light to move around, seems very durable, and is the space where we are using it (as a console table in a bedroom) it is fine. Definitely fits the minimalist description. Delivery was great and it was packaged very well. Arrived with no damage and on time.
