Solution-dyed acrylic — the fiber behind Sunbrella and similar performance fabrics — is what separates a cushion that fades after one summer from one that holds its color for five. The dye is locked into the fiber during manufacturing rather than applied to the surface, so UV exposure, rain, and pool splash can't strip it. Our luxury outdoor cushions feature top-grade performance fabrics paired with weather-resistant foam cores and construction details like double-stitched welting and reinforced tie-downs.
Not all outdoor fabrics perform the same way. The right choice depends on your climate, how much direct sun the cushions receive, and whether they stay out year-round or get stored between seasons.
The core determines how a cushion feels — and how long it keeps feeling that way. Dense foam rated at 1.8 lb/ft³ or higher delivers firm, lasting support. Open-cell quick-dry foam lets water drain through instead of pooling inside, which is essential for furniture that sits uncovered.
Dacron-wrapped foam pairs a structured core with a soft polyester outer layer. The result is a plush surface that doesn't bottom out. Polyester fill alone costs less but compresses over time — fine for decorative throw pillows, less ideal for seat cushions you'll use daily. For those, foam or Dacron-wrapped foam is the stronger choice.
Measure your frames before you order. Seat depth, width, and back height vary across manufacturers, and a cushion even two inches off will slide or bunch. Chaise lounges and curved frames call for hinged or foldable cushions designed to bend at the right point.
Tie-down straps matter more than most buyers expect. One strong gust can send an unsecured cushion across the patio. Look for reinforced fabric ties or toggle fasteners that clip directly to the frame.
For routine care, most Sunbrella covers can be unzipped and machine-washed in cold water with mild soap. Stand foam cores on edge to dry fully — never stuff a damp core back into its cover. Store luxury cushions in a ventilated deck box or bring them indoors over winter, and they'll look sharp for years.
